Alibaba's Qwen3.8-Max: China's AI Challenger to US Giants

Chinese tech giant Alibaba has released what it calls its largest and most capable AI model to date. It claims this new model, named Qwen3.8-Max, performs as well as top systems from US labs like Anthropic and OpenAI. What's interesting is that Alibaba is making this model widely available. Its own testing suggests Qwen3.8-Max broadly matches or even exceeds Anthropic's Fable 5 on benchmark tests. On the crowdsourced Arena.AI platform, it ranks just below Fable 5 and some Anthropic Opus models. The model has 2.4 trillion parameters. Alibaba will also release the "weights" for Qwen3.8-Max next week. This return to open-weight releases is a growing trend in China's AI industry. This matters because it could intensify the global competition for AI leadership.
