Anthropic Investment: Menlo Ventures' $14B Bet Explained

Menlo Ventures' early investment in Anthropic is now worth an estimated $14 billion. This significant return comes despite initial concerns that Anthropic was too expensive, too early, and had no revenue. What's interesting is that Menlo partner Matt Murphy met Anthropic's cofounder and CEO on a five-minute Zoom meeting in early 2023. At that time, Anthropic was pre-revenue and sought a $4.1 billion valuation, which was above Menlo's usual range. Murphy felt there was room for a rival to OpenAI, comparing it to Pepsi to OpenAI's Coke. Menlo Ventures has invested in every round since 2023 and also launched the Menlo Anthology Fund in partnership with Anthropic. This bet has been transformative for the 50-year-old firm. Menlo recently announced it has raised $3 billion in new funding, more than double what it raised three years ago. This shows how a bold investment can lead to substantial growth.
