Anthropic: Surprise Profit Projected, Outpaces OpenAI

Anthropic has surprised investors by projecting a profit in the second quarter. This is a significant shift, as the company previously expected full-year profitability no earlier than 2028. Here's the thing: Anthropic is now on track for an expected $559 million in operating profit on $10.9 billion in revenue this current quarter. This is up from $4.8 billion in the first quarter. What's interesting is their efficiency; they expect to spend 56 cents on compute power for every dollar generated, a decrease from 71 cents in the first quarter. A key factor is timing. Anthropic has been slower to sign massive data center deals, which has helped them achieve this quarterly profitability. However, user demand is testing their compute capacity, and the company told investors it likely won't be profitable for the entire year as they increase capital expenditure. The bottom line: While OpenAI had more revenue in the first quarter, around $5.7 billion, they don't expect profitability until about 2030.
