Anthropic's Fable & Mythos Return: US AI Policy Unclear

Anthropic's Fable and Mythos models are back after the government rolled back export controls. These controls had temporarily disabled both models for all users. The government first reversed course on Mythos on Friday evening, then on Fable late on Tuesday. This will be a relief for Anthropic and its investors. Users hoping to use Fable for lengthy tasks can now do so, and cyber defenders can use Mythos to find security flaws. What's interesting is that the U.S. is reportedly working with leading AI labs on "voluntary standards" for frontier AI models. Anthropic is also collaborating with the U.S. government, Amazon, Microsoft, and Google on a framework to assess the risk of a model's guardrails being bypassed. The bottom line is that while these models are available again, the broader U.S. AI policy remains unclear and largely ad hoc.
