Modi, Takaichi: AI & Security Drive India-Japan Ties

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s first official visit to India has significantly deepened the bilateral relationship, focusing on AI, defense technology, economic security, and energy resilience. Both governments used the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit to address supply-chain risks, energy shocks, and regional influence. Takaichi arrived in New Delhi for a three-day visit. She held summit talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The leaders announced multiple agreements covering artificial intelligence, defense, energy, economic security, and health. India and Japan adopted three major documents on economic security, energy resilience, and AI cooperation. They also signed their first defense co-development pact, specifically for a naval radio antenna project. Modi stated this project would open a new chapter in defense technology cooperation. What's interesting is that AI was a central theme, with Modi suggesting Japan's precision technology and India's software capability could boost global AI development. Indian AI institutions also signed agreements with Japanese partners. The two sides had already launched an AI Cooperation Initiative in 2025. Economic security also moved up the agenda, with a joint roadmap to strengthen supply-chain resilience in sectors like semiconductors. The bottom line is this collaboration aims to strengthen both nations amidst a turbulent international environment.
