Apple AI in China: Own Model & Alibaba Partnership

Apple is reportedly training its own AI model for China. This model is set to become part of Apple Intelligence, a suite of AI features launching in the coming months. The company faces growing pressure in China from local manufacturers like Huawei, who are already promoting AI-powered smartphones. The absence of Apple Intelligence on iPhones in China has complicated the battle for customers. What's interesting is Apple's partnership with Alibaba began in February 2025. Alibaba's CEO, Joe Cai, announced Apple chose his company after negotiations with several Chinese developers. The launch of these AI services was delayed to adapt the technology to Chinese regulatory requirements. In July, China’s Cyberspace Administration registered Apple’s generative AI service. It was originally expected to include Alibaba’s Qwen model and Baidu’s technologies. This collaboration could make Apple the first foreign company to get Beijing’s approval for its own AI model in China. The bottom line is the Chinese market is incredibly important for Apple in the race for leadership in artificial intelligence.
