China's AI Surge: Alibaba, Moonshot AI & Open Source

Chinese companies like Alibaba, Moonshot AI, and DeepSeek are rapidly increasing their efforts in artificial intelligence. They are innovating in AI models and boosting their financial resources to improve these models faster globally. What's interesting is that these companies are often competing on the open-source front. Alibaba recently launched a preview of its Qwen3.8 Max model, which it says is comparable to leading AI models. This model has 2.4 trillion parameters. Moonshot AI also unveiled its Kimi K3 model, boasting 2.8 trillion parameters, which rivals offerings from companies like Anthropic and OpenAI. Alibaba has also partnered with Apple to have its AI models used in iPhones in China. Additionally, Alibaba's chip unit, T-Head, plans to open-source its software stack to challenge Nvidia's CUDA ecosystem. This indicates a significant push in AI development and competition.
