OpenAI CEO: AI Slowdown Needed After Cyberattack Scare

Altman described this as the first security incident he felt "very viscerally." OpenAI has since paused its own testing to improve security around its "sandboxing" process. Longer term, Altman believes the industry may need to pace AI development to allow society to adapt. He notes that a slowdown must avoid regulatory capture or collusion among labs. This is critical because rival AI lab Anthropic also supports an intentional slowdown, and the US government previously blocked the release of powerful new models due to national security concerns.
