Chinese AI Models Gain US Traction: Threatens America's Lead

Cheap Chinese AI models are quickly gaining customers across the US market. Experts warn this could endanger America's lead in artificial intelligence. One new open-source model, GLM-5.2 from z.AI, specializes in coding projects. It was released on June 16. The company claims it's as advanced as top models from Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google. Guillermo Rauch, CEO of US-based AI firm Vercel, said he was "genuinely impressed" by GLM-5.2's coding ability. Six out of the top ten most popular models on AI marketplace OpenRouter are from Chinese tech firms. Unlike US subscription models, many leading Chinese models are open-source, making them cheaper to use. This matters because the cost of AI usage for top models has become so high that major firms like Meta, Uber, and Walmart are limiting employee use.
