Dario Amodei: Not Against Open Models, But China Chip Sales

Earlier this month, a Chinese AI lab released a new model that ranks highly. This lab was among several accused by Anthropic of intellectual property theft through a process called "distillation." This process uses one model's output to train another. Amodei's statement aligns with much of a recent industry letter, co-signed by companies like Nvidia and Microsoft, urging against restrictions on open models. OpenAI also signed this letter. The bottom line is that Amodei's main concerns are not with open models themselves but with other issues, which he refers to as "nightmare scenarios."
