EU AI Act Enforceable: What Changes for AI Models?

Today, the EU's rules on AI models become enforceable, establishing Brussels as a leading AI regulator. This marks the first comprehensive law regulating artificial intelligence. The AI Act, passed in 2024, includes significant provisions for large language models that become applicable this August. These rules require transparency on how models are built and disclosure of copyrighted training content. They also mandate enough information for users to understand a model's capabilities. Companies developing powerful "frontier" models face additional requirements to identify and mitigate risks to society. Last year, the Commission endorsed a voluntary code of practice, signed by most leading Western AI labs, though Meta was a notable exception. The European AI Office will enforce these rules, a challenging task given the rapid evolution of AI technology and the limited resources available. The Commission plans to use external expertise, including scientists and specialized AI safety firms, to keep pace.
