Europe Courts Anthropic Amid US AI Restrictions

Austria has asked the European Union to consider hosting the AI company Anthropic within Europe. This comes weeks after the US restricted foreign access to some of Anthropic's advanced AI models. State Secretary for Digitalization, Alexander Pröll, made the proposal to the European Commission. He says Europe risks being cut off from new AI breakthroughs if it doesn't act now. Pröll suggested incentives like legal certainty, fresh capital, and full access to Europe's single market. The US Commerce Department issued an export directive on June 12, barring foreign nationals from accessing Anthropic's Claude Fable 5 and Claude Mythos 5 models due to national security concerns. Anthropic subsequently pulled both models worldwide. However, Anthropic has strong ties to the US, including plans for a $50 billion data center build in Texas and New York. Amazon, a major backer, has invested $13 billion and is its primary training partner. The bottom line is that Europe wants to secure its place in the future of AI development.
