Google Earth AI Paused: Misuse Concerns Halt New Feature

Google has paused a new AI-powered feature in Google Earth less than 48 hours after its global launch. The company says it saw users sharing AI-generated images that appeared to violate its policies. The feature, powered by Google's Nano Banana 2 image-generation model, allowed users to create AI-generated scenes using Google Earth's satellite imagery. Users could zoom into a location, tap "Create image," and describe what they wanted to see. Google announced an update on July 31, stating it was temporarily disabling the feature to strengthen its safeguards. The company noted that while geospatial professionals used it for useful purposes, others shared imagery violating policies. Google reassured users that generated images were watermarked and never became part of the public Google Earth experience. The BBC generated images like a collapsed Eiffel Tower and Russian tanks entering Kyiv, illustrating how realistic AI content could be anchored to real locations.
