Instagram AI Images: Meta's New Privacy Risk Explained

Meta has decided that anyone can now generate AI images of you from your public Instagram account. They just type your Instagram handle into a prompt. Cybersecurity firm Malwarebytes warns this tool could be used for "impersonation, scams, or other abuse." What's more, Meta will not notify you if someone creates an AI image using your likeness. This makes it difficult to know when or how your image has been used. You can opt out by going to your Instagram Profile, then Menu, then Sharing and reuse. Turn off the toggles for Posts and Reels under "Allow people to reuse your content on Instagram and with AI features at Meta." However, opting out only prevents future image generation. Any AI images created before you switched off the setting will remain. This matters because it creates new privacy and security risks for millions of users.
