Kimi K3: China's AI Model Rivals ChatGPT, Surprises US Tech

A new artificial intelligence model from China is surprising the US tech industry. The Kimi K3 model from Beijing-based startup Moonshot appears to rival the best versions of Anthropic's Claude and OpenAI's ChatGPT. Anastasios Angelopoulos, CEO of Arena, calls K3 potentially the "single biggest release of the year." He notes that open-source Chinese models are now surpassing closed US models. Kimi K3 topped Arena's rankings for "front-end coding capability," a key measure of AI performance. This release follows another major AI model last month from Chinese startup Zhipu, or Z.ai. Its GLM-5.2 model is used globally and offers performance close to top US models at a lower price. The price to use K3 is also half that of OpenAI's GPT-5.6 Sol model. The bottom line: Chinese AI advancements are intensifying the global rivalry in artificial intelligence.
