Meta Hires AI Security Red Team Amid Ransomware Threat

Dawn Song, a prominent computer security researcher and UC Berkeley professor, is joining Meta Superintelligence Labs as Vice President of AI Research. She brings with her three co-founders and part of the team from Virtue AI, an enterprise AI security startup. What's interesting is this move comes just after the first documented proof of an autonomous AI agent executing a full ransomware operation without human intervention. Virtue AI was specifically built to counter this type of threat. The startup, founded in 2024, raised $30 million and had a customer list including Anthropic, NVIDIA, and Microsoft. Its core product, VirtueRed, performed continuous, automated red-teaming, using over 100 attack algorithms and 600 distinct attack vectors to find vulnerabilities in AI agents. The bottom line is that the team designed to stop autonomous AI threats is now inside Meta, which could impact enterprises using Meta's AI models.
