Moonshot AI: Kimi K3 Challenges OpenAI & Anthropic

Chinese AI firm Moonshot has unveiled a new open-source AI model. Its capabilities are similar to those from Anthropic and OpenAI. The model is called Kimi K3. It was trained on 2.8 trillion parameters. This could make it one of the largest AI models ever released. Moonshot says Kimi K3 outperforms Anthropic’s Opus 4.8 and OpenAI’s ChatGPT 5.5 for most coding tasks. However, it is less powerful than Anthropic’s Fable model. As an open-source model, Kimi K3 will be available for download. It is expected to be much cheaper to use than closed-source models. For instance, Moonshot’s K2.6 model was about one-third the cost of Opus 4.8. This development could challenge the idea that America has a significant lead in advanced AI models.
