Musk: AI Will Cure Cancer, Citing Anthropic CEO

Elon Musk believes AI will cure cancer. This comes after Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said AI companies need to show tangible results, like curing cancer, instead of just optimistic marketing. Musk responded on X, simply stating, "AI will do it." Amodei emphasized that the way to overcome public skepticism and a "crisis of trust" is by actually curing cancer. He feels AI companies haven't yet delivered on their biggest promises. Amodei previously suggested powerful AI could compress decades of biological progress into just five to ten years. Musk has also expressed similar high expectations for AI in medicine, suggesting it could "cure almost anything." Meanwhile, AI is already being used in oncology research to accelerate screening, model drug responses, and predict patient outcomes. Researchers at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory used AI to generate thousands of tumor-targeting protein designs in a short time. Penn Medicine researchers also built an AI framework that quickly identified a target for CAR T-cell therapy, which showed tumor-killing activity in mouse models. These advances are still in preclinical stages. The bottom line is that Amodei is challenging AI companies to deliver measurable progress, not just hype.
