NCGA Allots $3.2M to Alamance Schools for AI Security Pilot

Legislators have allotted $3.2 million to the Alamance-Burlington School System for an AI School Safety Pilot Program. This funding was originally part of the 2023 state budget. It was initially allocated to Davidson County Schools and New Hanover County Schools. To get the funds, districts needed to integrate AI technology into their school safety systems. Davidson County Schools proceeded with the program. However, New Hanover County Schools did not, due to concerns about data security and the AI tech company, Eviden. In the latest state budget, legislators redirected New Hanover's funding to the Alamance-Burlington School System. An ABSS spokesperson stated the district will gather more information from the company and present it to the school board before moving forward. This decision is expected around September. This funding could significantly change how school safety is approached in the Alamance-Burlington School System.
