Thomson Reuters Launches "Thomson" LLM for Legal AI

Thomson Reuters has officially launched "Thomson," its own proprietary large language model. This LLM was trained using content from Westlaw and Practical Law. What's interesting is that Thomson Reuters emphasizes this model was developed at a fraction of the cost of other major LLMs like ChatGPT and Claude. They invested approximately $40 million over the past two years, with the final training run costing just $450,000. Thomson will first be deployed in CoCounsel Legal, specifically powering its Tabular Analysis functionality. Thomson Reuters plans to extend this model across its portfolio of legal and tax products.
