US Lifts Export Ban on Anthropic AI Tools: Claude Fable 5 & Mythos 5

The United States has lifted export controls on Anthropic’s most powerful AI tools. This comes just weeks after a ban was put in place due to national security concerns. Anthropic announced late on Tuesday it would begin restoring access to Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 starting Wednesday. The US Department of Commerce notified the company that the export restrictions on these two models have been removed. These are the firm's most advanced AI tools. They were suspended on June 12th over worries they could be used by hackers. The Commerce Department states Anthropic has now addressed these risks. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick wrote that Anthropic has agreed to proactively detect and address security risks. The firm will also collaborate on future AI model releases and alert the government of any malicious activity. The Commerce Department retains the right to reconsider its decision. Fable 5 is for consumers, capable of deep reasoning and complex tasks. Mythos 5 is for businesses and cybersecurity experts, able to identify and exploit code vulnerabilities. Both models were released on June 9th. This matters because it signals a path for advanced AI tools to be used more broadly while attempting to manage security risks.
