Anthropic Pays $1.5B in Historic Copyright Settlement

A federal judge has approved a $1.5 billion settlement between Anthropic and authors. This is the largest copyright class action settlement in history. The AI company was accused of illegally downloading copyrighted books. Lead plaintiffs Andrea Bartz and Kirk Wallace Johnson were among those who brought claims. The dispute focused on how Anthropic acquired the books, not the legality of training AI with copyrighted material. The court had previously determined that training itself constitutes fair use. Authors whose pirated books were on Anthropic's "Works List" can claim about $3,000 per book. This is roughly four times the usual minimum for copyright infringement cases. Over 440,000 books, more than 91% of eligible works, have already been claimed. Anthropic must also delete the pirated files it downloaded. The settlement releases Anthropic only from past liability regarding data acquisition, not from future lawsuits about AI output or new claims. This settlement sets a precedent for how AI companies might address copyright issues.
