Chinese AI Firms Boost Local LLM Development in Emerging Markets

Chinese AI firms are helping emerging markets develop their own large language models. This is happening in places with big digital-economy potential. What's interesting is that these companies are adapting the models to local languages and specific industry needs. This addresses a gap, as leading global models often overlook less-spoken languages. Experts warn that countries with less-used languages could be sidelined by AI. For example, iFLYTEK, a Chinese tech company, is using its speech intelligence expertise. Their speech large language model, Spark, supports over 130 languages for recognition and interpretation. They've also created the Spark ASEAN Multilingual Large Model Base, covering 10 languages like Malay and Thai. This base offers performance comparable to top international models with smaller sizes. iFLYTEK has signed deals with partners in countries like Laos, Malaysia, and Thailand. In Malaysia, they've set up an AI multilingual intelligent dubbing and translation center. This center supports translation for over 130 languages. The company's vice president, Dong Bin, notes a strong demand for models customized for local languages. The company has also open-sourced its large model, allowing nearly 600,000 overseas developer teams to build custom products. This effort ensures that AI technology serves a wider range of communities globally.
